Colorado Blizzards

Blizzards are extremely powerful and dangerous snow storms that generally feature very high winds, driving snow, and freezing or sub-freezing temperatures. They can force people to evacuate their homes and sadly, sometimes lose their homes leaving them to have to find a new place to live.

Blizzards can be deadly to any human caught out in the elements and claim the lives of people each and every year. Colorado, also known as the Rocky Mountain State, has very high elevations throughout the state and so is the prime location for blizzards to hit each year.

Being a popular tourist location, travelers should be aware of any blizzard warnings and take heed of local safety measures when they are traveling to Colorado.

vColorado's blizzards are epic in proportions. One of the most recent large blizzards to hit Colorado was in the winter of 2006. Occurring from December 20th through the 21st, this Colorado blizzard covered the Colorado Front Range, one of the most populated regions of the state which is located just east of the foothills of the Rockies.

The blizzard halted all major interstates located in Colorado, stopped US mail delivery, and shut down the entire city of Denver. Four deaths have been confirmed as a result of this Colorado blizzard.

Later in that same winter, a second blizzard hit Colorado, though admittedly less intense. However, the weather patterns that circulate through Colorado, playing off of the sheer cliffs of the Rockies ensure that Colorado blizzards are not a rare event and should be taken into heavy consideration when visiting the state during those months.
